Comic books are no longer just "funny books" as they once were called. Instead, today comics address issues of society and popular culture. While some comics are simply commentary or entertainment (with great plots and art) some lofty comic book writers try to raise issues in the society of the time.

Many older super hero comics were focused on good vs evil; and were slightly veiled attempts at showing such struggles as democracy against communism (from the vantage point of the United States). As time has progressed, there are aften enviromental, racial and crime issues that are covered. Some comics have ventured into the realm of sexuality, drug use and vices that mankind struggles with as well.

It is a matter of history that writers and artists have influcenced heavy socail issues through the various mediums, but the impact of comic book artists, writers and creators has often been over looked.
